CAMDEN, N.J. – FEB. 5, 2025 – New Jersey American Water is investing approximately $15 million to replace approximately 18,000 feet of aging water main in Long Branch. The existing pipes, originally installed in the 1920s and 1950s, will be upgraded to new ductile iron main to improve service reliability and increase water flows for household consumption and fire protection. The project will take place along the following streets: Liberty Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Parkway, Belmont Avenue, Slocum Place, Van Dyke Place, Garfield Avenue (from 2nd Avenue to 3rd Avenue), Morris Avenue (from Broadway to Westwood Avenue), Willow Avenue (from Broadway to Westwood Avenue), Chelsea Avenue (from 2nd Avenue to South 5th Avenue), 3rd Avenue (from Broadway to Franklin Avenue) and 2nd, 4th and South 5th Avenues (from Broadway to Chelsea Avenue).
In addition to replacing the aging water mains and installing meter pits where needed, New Jersey American Water will inspecting identified properties service lines along the project route as part of the company’s statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031. Test holes will be performed at identified properties and if lead or galvanized steel pipe is found, affected customers will be contacted to coordinate replacement as part of the project.
“This investment is part of our continued commitment to upgrading critical water infrastructure and improving service reliability,” said Joseph Meyer, senior manager of Field Operations at New Jersey American Water. “We work closely with local communities to ensure our projects align with municipal development initiatives, allowing us to enhance water service while minimizing disruption.”
Weather permitting, New Jersey American Water’s qualified contractor, Montana Construction, will begin work on or about the week of February 10, with completion expected by the end of August 2025. The final street restoration will be completed in the spring of 2026. Work hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work on weekends and evenings is not anticipated unless necessary to maintain the project schedule.

For the safety of the public and construction crews, traffic restrictions and/or alternating traffic patterns will be in place during work hours. Emergency vehicles and local traffic will have access during construction. New Jersey American Water values the safety of its workers and urges drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution around work zones.
