PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 05, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that contractors have completed almost 70% of the aging 42-inch water mains along Becks Run Road. This milestone marks a significant step in a major infrastructure investment project related to the Hays Mine Treatment Plant, which serves approximately 137,000 customers in southern Allegheny County and northern Washington County.
“We appreciate the ongoing patience of our project corridor residents, businesses and motorists as we upgrade this aging infrastructure to ensure high-quality water service for our valued customers in the greater Pittsburgh area,” said Pennsylvania American Water Director of Operation Jake Gentile.
Pennsylvania American Water has installed approximately two miles of new water main along Becks Run Road from Wagner Street south towards the Hays Mine Water Treatment Plant at Agnew Road and in the lower section of Becks Run Road from East Carson Street to Susquehanna Street.
The project began in June 2024 and is currently underway in the middle section of Becks Run Road between Susquehanna Street and Wagner Street. Vehicle traffic in this section is limited, and motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and adhere to all safety warnings throughout the construction zone. The entire water main installation project is expected to be completed by mid-summer 2025.
In addition to the water main project, Pennsylvania American Water is making significant investments and upgrades to its Hays Mine Water Treatment Plant. These upgrades include replacing the plant's caustic soda tanks, enhancing the system’s resilience, reliability and safety for employees and the environment. Additionally, the company will replace the solids-handling equipment to improve efficiency and reduce water usage in the treatment process.
Pennsylvania American Water is also renovating 16 filters that are about 70 years old. This renovation is vital for maintaining high water quality, ensuring system efficiency and protecting public health. The upgrades enhance the removal of contaminants, improve overall system performance and lower long-term maintenance costs. Furthermore, these renovations support environmental protection by preventing pollution and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
