Pennsylvania American Water Temporary Road Closure Along Green Ridge Street, Scranton
Closure scheduled to complete portion of $15 million wastewater system improvement project

SCRANTON, Pa. (April 25, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the final temporary closure of both lanes of Green Ridge Street in Scranton, between Albright Avenue and Ross Street, beginning Monday, April 28 through Friday, May 9. Both lanes will remain closed outside of work hours and throughout the weekend. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes.

The work is part of a $15 million project that includes the construction of a new 780,000-gallon water storage facility, which is currently under construction in the Green Ridge Plaza. The project also includes new valves, manholes and flow meters. The new storage tank is part of the Scranton Wastewater System Long-Term Control Plan to reduce overflow events from the combined wastewater system.

“This is the final phase of installing new pipe and manholes in this area,” said Matt Griffith, senior project engineer for Pennsylvania American Water. “We do not anticipate any further road closures associated with this project.”

The project, which began in March 2024, is part of $189 million investment in the Scranton wastewater system to improve service and protect local waterways. The American Society of Civil Engineers recently graded America’s infrastructure, giving wastewater a D+, highlighting the need for significant investment in wastewater infrastructure.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
