Press Releases
KITTANNING, Pa. (June 17, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced significant infrastructure upgrades in the City of Kittanning, totaling approximately $2.9 million. The projects will ensure reliability and water quality for customers and increase water flow for household use and firefighting.
A major component of the company’s investment includes a $1.2 million water main replacement project along Orr Avenue, from Lemon Way to Rayburn Street. The project will replace 3,720 feet of aging pipe originally installed in the early 1900s with a new eight-inch ductile iron main. The upgrade will enhance water flow and reduce the risk of main breaks and leaks. Work will start this week, with project completion anticipated by early fall.
A new booster station is currently under construction on Orchard Avenue, which will assist with improving water pressure, enhancing fire protection, and increasing overall system reliability for customers in the area. The previous station had been in operation for over 60 years and is being replaced with a modern, more efficient system to meet the evolving demands of the area.
This follows the recent installation of a booster station on Troy Hill, now serving customers from eastern Kittanning to the Hillside community. To further enhance system reliability, a backup generator is being installed at the raw water pumping station on North Jefferson Street to ensure continued operation during power outages. It’s expected to be operational by the end of June.
Contractors will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The first main installations will be completed in the coming weeks, with rolling progress until all mains are replaced and final restoration is completed late this summer and early fall, respectively.
During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
