Pennsylvania American Water Enhances Public Safety and Water Quality with New Extensions
Open houses help residents connect to new water service and learn next steps

MCMURRAY, Pa. (July 16, 2025) –Pennsylvania American Water recently finished two major water main extension projects in Washington County, giving residents who previously relied on private wells the opportunity to tap into reliable, high-quality drinking water. The project also provides the communities with new fire hydrants to support fire protection efforts. The two water main extension projects were supported by more than $15 million in PENNVEST loans.

“The focus of these projects are that residents have drinking water that meets current and proposed drinking water standards while improving overall water quality,” said Project Manager Morgan Castle.

The Avella Road waterline extension consists of more than six miles of eight-inch ductile iron waterline along Avella Road (State Route 50) in Cross Creek, Independence and Mount Pleasant townships. The new line will serve Avella School and potentially 43 new customer connections, while also adding 20 fire hydrants to support the community.

The Old Steubenville Pike and Campbell Road waterline extension project includes nearly three miles of four, six, and eight-inch ductile iron waterlines and three fire hydrants, providing service to 17 potential new customers in Robinson and Smith townships.

Both projects included necessary surface restoration, traffic management and erosion and sediment control.

To answer questions and assist residents in applying for service and installing customer-owned service lines, Pennsylvania American Water will host two open houses in July. The first open house for Robinson and Smith township residents is scheduled on July 22 from 4-6 p.m. at the Robinson Township Municipal Building, located at 8400 Noblestown Road, McDonald, PA.

The second open house for Cross Creek, Independence and Mount Pleasant township residents is scheduled for July 28 from 46 p.m. at the Bull Pen Rustic Inn, located at 301 County Park Road, Avella, PA.
