Pennsylvania American Water Announces $1.1 Million Additional Water Line Upgrades in Scranton
Additional investment to upgrade more than one mile of water main

SCRANTON, Pa. (August 21, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of a $1.1 million project to replace more than one mile of water main in the City of Scranton to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions and increase water flows for firefighting. Earlier this year, the company installed more than 5.6 miles of new water main in the city totaling more than $9 million.

The project, which started earlier this month, involves replacing more than 5,400 feet of existing smaller diameter pipe with new eight-inch ductile iron mains along several city streets, including:

  • North Bromley Avenue (from Lafayette Street to Jackson Street)
  • Penn Avenue (from Sunset Street to Delaware Street)
  • South Sumner Avenue (from Washburn Street to Jackson Street)
  • South Bromley Avenue (from Washburn Street to Jackson Street)
  • Capouse Avenue (from Sunset Street to Delaware Street)
  • South Lincoln Street (from Washburn Street to Jackson Street)
  • Delaware Street (from Monsey Avenue to Penn Avenue)

Crews will work weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the water main installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains along with final restoration and paving in late fall.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. For worksite safety, Pennsylvania American Water asks that members of the public do not approach its employees or contractors. For more information, contact the company’s Customer Service Organization at 1-800-565-7292.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
