Pennsylvania American Water to Replace More Than 250 Lead Service Lines in Homestead
$4.1 million PENNVEST-funded project brings safer drinking water to Allegheny County residents

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (September 9, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that it will soon begin replacing approximately 250 lead service lines in Homestead Borough, Allegheny County.

“Access to safe, clean drinking water is fundamental to the health and well-being of our communities,” said state Senator Nick Pisciottano. “I’m proud to partner with Pennsylvania American Water and PENNVEST on this investment in Homestead to replace lead service lines at no cost to customers. By working together, we can protect public health and give families peace of mind knowing their water is safe.”

This project, which starts on September 8, is funded by a $2,462,153 low-interest loan and $1,637,847 grant from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST). This low-interest loan and grant funding helps to improve water quality and safety while helping to maintain reasonable service costs for customers.

“At Pennsylvania American Water, our top priority is to provide safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water,” said JoAnn Hepler, senior manager of water quality and environmental compliance for Pennsylvania American Water. "Although our water meets all standards, we are working to replace lead service lines to improve health, safety, and peace of mind."

Contractors will survey the area to identify unknown service line materials. They will wear high-visibility vests and contractor ID badges. If lead or galvanized steel lines are found, customers will receive information on replacing them at no direct cost. Replacements will begin as lead service lines are identified.

Customers can find more information on the company’s lead service line replacement program, answers to frequently asked questions and a guide to help self-identify the material of their service line at pennsylvaniaamwater.com/leadfacts.

Any customer can self-report their service line material online. To complete the service line inventory report from a phone or tablet, customers will need to:

1.) Enter their contact information,

2.) Identify their service line material and

3.) Upload a picture of their service line.
