Pennsylvania American Water Announces Water Main Replacement Projects in Butler County
Project coordination on water and wastewater main replacements will limit disruptions

BUTLER, Pa. (Nov. 10, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of water main replacement projects this month in Butler Township and the City of Butler to improve reliability and increase water flow for household use and firefighting. The more than $2.1 million infrastructure investment will replace nearly 1.3 miles of aging water main serving approximately 115 customer connections.

Included in these projects is a water main replacement on Sawmill Run Road in Butler Township, originally scheduled for spring of 2026, which was expedited to efficiently coordinate with a wastewater main replacement on the same street. Work on West Pearl Street in the City of Butler is also being coordinated with a $1.32 million project to replace 2,500 feet of wastewater main. As a result of Pennsylvania American Water’s acquisition of the Butler Area Sewer Authority in October 2024, the company now has the ability to coordinate the timing of water and wastewater infrastructure projects to help reduce costs and limit disruptions.

“We are continuously evaluating our system to prioritize infrastructure improvements that enable us to continue delivering the high quality, reliable water service our customers deserve,” said Eric Beringer, project manager for Pennsylvania American Water. “And we’re now able to coordinate projects in our Butler County water distribution and wastewater collection systems, so we’re working efficiently and cost-effectively to address aging infrastructure while minimizing disruptions.”

Contractors will be working in the following areas to replace old water mains with new pipes as part of the system investments:

City of Butler

  • North McKean Street (from Lumar Village to 811 N. McKean Street)
  • West Pearl Street (from Bredin Street to North Washington Street)
  • Delta Way (from Fairview Avenue to Brown Avenue)
  • Glenn Avenue (from Center Avenue to Brown Avenue)

Butler Township

  • McCandless Avenue (from Boyd Drive to 107 McCandless Ave.)
  • Steelton Avenue (from Mellon Street to Weir Avenue)
  • Semanco Avenue (from Kohler Avenue to 118 Semanco Ave.)
  • Sawmill Run Road (from England Street to South Eberhart Road)

Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. Final street restoration is expected to be completed in the spring and summer of 2026.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. For more information, customers may contact Pennsylvania American Water’s Customer Service Organization at 1-800-565-7292.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
