STEELTON, Pa. (Nov. 13, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water will temporarily suspend service tonight for about 207 households in Steelton to support a $1.3 million water replacement project. Crews will be working this evening, starting at 9:00 p.m. through early tomorrow morning, at the intersection of Swatara Street and Sixth Street in Steelton.
“This phase of the project is a key milestone in our efforts to modernize Steelton’s water system,” said Joseph Woodward, senior director of operations for Pennsylvania American Water. “By replacing outdated and aging infrastructure with newer, more durable materials, we’re investing in long-term reliability and service quality for our customers."
Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction, which is expected to be completed by 4 a.m. on Nov. 14. The final restoration of the roadway is expected to take place in the following weeks, weather permitting. This is the second stage of a four-phase improvement project, which will replace 660 feet of water main, installed in the 1920s, with new ductile iron pipe.
In addition to this project, Pennsylvania American Water recently announced an $8.9 million investment to replace 4.5 miles of aging water main in six Cumberland County communities, reinforcing the company’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and ensuring reliable service.
This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic vitality of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
