Pennsylvania American Water Announces $3 Million Wastewater System Upgrade in York

Project will improve system reliability, increase capacity and help protect local waterways

YORK, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2026)Pennsylvania American Water announced today that the $3 million wastewater system improvement project, which will strengthen service reliability and help protect local waterways in the City of York, will begin in January.

The project will replace approximately 2,500 feet of aging wastewater pipeline along Prospect Street with a new, larger‑diameter main that carries wastewater safely through the system.

“This investment helps ensure our wastewater system continues to operate safely and efficiently for years to come,” said Scott Thomas, director of engineering project delivery for Pennsylvania American Water. “By increasing capacity and improving performance, we’re enhancing reliability for our customers while also supporting cleaner streams and rivers in the York area.”

The upgraded pipe will increase in size from 12 inches to 18 inches, allowing it to better handle current and future flows, especially during periods of heavy rain. This improvement will reduce system stress and improve overall performance.

Upgrading this critical section of the wastewater system will improve the system’s ability to convey wastewater during wet‑weather events, helping reduce the risk of backups or overflows and protecting the surrounding watershed.

The Prospect Street Wastewater Pipeline Replacement Project is part of Pennsylvania American Water’s broader investment to strengthen wastewater service in York. Since 2022, the company has invested more than $15 million in system improvements focused on reliability, environmental protection and meeting the community's long‑term needs.

Crews will work weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The entire project is expected to take approximately six months, with final restoration likely to be completed in the summer of 2026.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public and environmental health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
