New Jersey American Water to Upgrade Plainfield Water Infrastructure With $3.5 Million Investment

CAMDEN, N.J. – Feb. 18, 2026 – New Jersey American Water is investing approximately $3.5 million to upgrade critical water infrastructure in Plainfield. The project includes installing over a mile of new ductile iron water main to replace aging cast iron pipe originally installed in the 1930s, helping to improve reliability, water quality, and fire protection for local customers.

The work involves replacing existing 6‑inch and 2‑inch cast iron mains with new 12‑inch, 8‑inch, and 6‑inch ductile iron pipe across several streets, along with renewing 101 service lines and installing 11 new fire hydrants. This investment reflects the company’s long‑term commitment to strengthen water infrastructure in more than 100 communities across New Jersey, supporting consistent service and system performance over time.

Work will take place along the following streets:

  • Watchung Avenue from Belvidere Avenue to Leland Avenue
  • Oak Lane from Watchung Avenue to Sleepy Hollow Lane
  • Prospect Avenue
  • Locust Avenue from Oakland Avenue to the end
  • Rangewood Court from Fernwood Lane to the end
  • Colonial Circle from Watchung Avenue to the end

Construction is underway and is expected to be completed by June 2026. Crews will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend or evening work is not expected unless needed to maintain the project schedule. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained, and crews will coordinate directly with residents to minimize disruptions.

Work is being performed by New Jersey American Water’s local, qualified contractor Montana Construction, with traffic control coordinated in partnership with local officials. Motorists should use caution near work zones and expect typical construction noise during work hours. Emergency vehicles and local traffic will have access at all times. Daily cleanup will occur, and driveway and sidewalk restoration will be completed upon project conclusion. Where excavation is required, temporary surface restoration will be provided, and permanent restoration will follow once soil settles in fall 2026.
