NEW CASTLE, Pa. (Feb. 24, 2026) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today the completion of a water main replacement project totaling more than $280,000, that will help improve system reliability for the City of New Castle.
“This upgrade improves water quality and reliability for New Castle customers by replacing aging infrastructure,” said Eric Beringer, project manager for Pennsylvania American Water. “It also helps ensure the system can meet the community’s needs well into the future.”
The project involved replacing 1,100 feet of aging pipe that was previously installed in the 1920s with six-inch ductile iron main along Magee Street (from Smithfield Street to High Street) and Walter Street (from Smithfield Street to High Street). This upgrade will improve water quality, service reliability and increase flow for household use and firefighting.
Contractor Mortimer’s Excavating completed the replacement this week. Final street restoration is scheduled for spring and summer of 2026.
This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 10 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $722 million in 2025 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 7,220 jobs through these continued investments.
