Pennsylvania American Water Begins Butler Reservoir Sampling to Help Maintain Water Quality

Monthly boat sampling will take place at Lake Oneida and Thorn Run reservoirs; recreational boating remains prohibited

BUTLER, Pa.  May 21, 2026)Pennsylvania American Water began monthly water quality sampling by boat this week on the Lake Oneida and Thorn Run reservoirs to help ensure safe, high-quality and reliable drinking water for customers in Butler County.

The enhanced monitoring program allows the company to better understand changing conditions in the reservoirs, helping operators adjust treatment processes and maintain water quality for more than 20,000 customer connections served by these sources.

“This work helps us deliver the high-quality water our customers depend on every day,” said Jake Gentile, senior director of operations for Pennsylvania American Water. “By monitoring conditions across the reservoirs, we can make real-time adjustments to treatment and continue providing safe, reliable service.”

Along with sampling, the company uses solar-powered mixers in both reservoirs to improve water quality. These mixers prevent algae growth by providing continuous circulation within the reservoirs.

The Lake Oneida and Thorn Run reservoirs supply water to customers in the City of Butler; Connoquenessing, East Butler and Saxonburg boroughs; and Butler, Center, Clinton, Connoquenessing, Donegal, Forward, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lancaster, Oakland, Penn and Summit townships.

While fishing is allowed from the shore, recreational boating is prohibited on both reservoirs. More information on fishing on Pennsylvania American Water-owned reservoirs is available here.
