Pennsylvania American Water Enhances Service, Plans Additional Upgrades in Washington County

Completed project improves pressure and reliability for new customers as $5.7 million in additional system improvements move forward

MCMURRAY, Pa. (June 10, 2026) Pennsylvania American Water today announced the completion of the Old Steubenville and Campbell Road waterline extension and pressure reducing valve (PRV) station project in Robinson and Smith townships, Washington County, extending safe, clean, reliable water service to customers in these areas as a benefit to the communities served.

“This project extends reliable, high-quality water service to customers in Robinson and Smith Townships while addressing the area’s elevation challenges,” said Morgan Castle, project delivery engineer for Pennsylvania American Water. “The new mains and PRV station allow us to safely manage pressure and deliver consistent, dependable service for customers.”

The project included the installation 16,125 feet – more than three miles – of four-, six- and eight-inch ductile iron main, extending from Pennsylvania American Water’s existing facilities in Bulger along Steubenville Pike and Campbell Road. The pressure reducing valve station was installed to control water pressure due to the area’s challenging elevations.

An additional $1.9 million in water main replacement projects are planned by the company in Canonsburg Borough and South Strabane and Amwell townships.

“Providing reliable service to our customers means making continuous investments in our infrastructure,” said Eric Beringer, manager of construction, Pennsylvania American Water. “We prioritize projects based on several criteria, including the need for larger mains to handle system demands, the age of existing pipe and the history of main breaks or service interruptions.”

Beginning in June, company contractors will install new six- and eight-inch ductile iron pipes, replacing aged water mains installed in the 1950s and 1960s in the following areas:

  • South Central Avenue (from McCoy Lane to 7 South Central Ave.) in Canonsburg Borough
  • North Main Street (from Oak Grove Road to Crile Road) in South Strabane Township
  • Guinn Drive (from Waynesburg Road to the dead end) in Amwell Township

Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work on weekends and evenings is not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule. The company expects to complete the main installation, including connecting all customer service lines, along with final street restoration and paving, later this fall.

During construction, customers may experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 10 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $722 million in 2025 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 7,220 jobs through these continued investments.
