$4.2 million PENNVEST-funded project brings safer drinking water to the City of Uniontown and North Union and South Union townships
UNIONTOWN, Pa. (June 10, 2026) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that it recently began replacing approximately 400 lead service lines in the City of Uniontown and North Union and South Union townships, bringing safer water to its customers in Fayette County. The work is supported by a $1,855,548 grant and a $2,365,390 loan from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST), allowing the company to improve water quality and safety while keeping service costs reasonable for customers.
“Access to safe, reliable drinking water is something every family should be able to count on,” said State Representative Charity Grimm Krupa. “Replacing these lead service lines is an important investment in both public health and the future of our community. I appreciate the partnership between Pennsylvania American Water and PENNVEST to bring these improvements to our region. Projects like this help protect our families, strengthen our infrastructure and ensure cleaner water for generations to come.”
The project began in August 2025, when Pennsylvania American Water contractors canvassed area neighborhoods to conduct inspections and identify service line materials. It now advances to its next phase, with identified replacements being completed by contractor Lee's Plumbing & Excavating Inc. throughout the coming year.
“At Pennsylvania American Water, our top priority is to provide safe, clean, reliable and affordable water,” said JoAnn Hepler, the company’s senior manager of water quality programs. "Although our water meets all standards, we are working to replace lead service lines to improve the health, safety and peace of mind of our customers."
