CAMDEN, N.J. – June 11, 2026 – New Jersey American Water is investing approximately $1.1 million in water infrastructure improvements in Middlesex Borough to help improve service reliability and increase water flows for customers and firefighters. This project is part of the company’s long-term commitment to upgrading aging infrastructure across the more than 190 communities it serves in New Jersey.
The project includes replacing about 2,500 feet of aging water main, originally installed in the 1960s, with new 8-inch ductile iron pipe along George Avenue from Lincoln Boulevard to Ashland Road. The work will also include installing two new fire hydrants and renewing 34 existing customer service lines, which will be connected to the new water main.
During construction, crews will also be checking water service lines for all properties along the project route by digging a small hole near the curb to identify the pipe material. If lead or galvanized steel piping is found, New Jersey American Water will work with the property owner to replace the service line from the curb to the home as part of a statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031.
“As we upgrade the water main, we’re also checking service lines at each property to understand what materials are in the ground,” said Mike A Rinaldo, construction inspector for New Jersey American Water. “This gives us a clearer picture of our system and helps us take the next steps in identifying and replacing lead and galvanized service lines, while strengthening the system long term.”
Weather permitting, work is expected to begin on or around June 17, 2026, and continue through mid-October. Crews will work Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work on weekends is not expected, unless required to maintain the project schedule.
The project will be performed by New Jersey American Water’s qualified contractor, CRJ, with traffic control coordinated in partnership with local officials to support safe travel around work areas. Access to homes and driveways will be maintained throughout construction. Daily cleanup will occur, and where excavation is required, temporary restoration will be installed. Permanent restoration will follow once the soil has settled, typically about 90 days after project completion.
