Press Releases
CAMDEN, N.J. – July 6, 2026 – New Jersey American Water is investing approximately $1.8 million in water infrastructure improvements in Chester Borough to help improve service reliability and increase water flows for customers and firefighters.
This project is part of the company’s long-term commitment to upgrading aging infrastructure across the more than 190 communities it serves in New Jersey.
The project includes replacing approximately half a mile of aging, 8-inch water main with new 12-inch ductile iron pipe. The work will also include replacing 18 utility-owned service lines, upgrading five fire hydrants.
As part of this work, if lead or galvanized piping is identified, New Jersey American Water will work with the property owner to replace the service line from the curb to the home as part of a statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031.
Work will take place along the following streets:
- Perry Street from Main Street to Maple Avenue
- Maple Avenue from Perry Street to Old Gladstone Road
- Old Gladstone Road from Maple Avenue to Orr Terrace
Weather permitting, work is expected to begin this week and continue through the end of August. Crews will work Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Work on weekends is not expected, unless required to maintain the project schedule.
The project will be performed by New Jersey American Water’s qualified contractor, J. Fletcher Creamer, with traffic control coordinated in partnership with local officials to support safe travel around work areas. Access to homes and driveways will be maintained throughout construction. Daily cleanup will occur, and where excavation is required, temporary restoration will be installed. Permanent restoration will follow once the soil has settled, typically about 90 days after project completion.
