CAMDEN, N.J. – Sept. 2, 2026 – New Jersey American Water is continuing its investment in Springfield with an additional $2 million water infrastructure project along U.S. Route 22 Eastbound, from Lawrence Road to the Rahway River crossing. Following a recently announced $1.6 million project in the community, this latest investment will replace aging water main to help improve service reliability and increase water flow for customers and firefighters. This project is part of the company’s long-term commitment to upgrading aging infrastructure across the more than 190 communities it serves in New Jersey.

By upgrading aging infrastructure today, we’re helping strengthen the water system and support reliable service for years to come.”
The work includes replacing slightly more than half a mile of aging 6-inch cast iron water main dating back to the 1940s with new 12-inch and 16-inch ductile iron pipe. The project also includes renewing customer water service lines, fire hydrants and valves.
Weather permitting, construction is expected to begin on or around Sept. 8, 2026, and continue through the end of November. Crews will work overnight Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to help minimize traffic impacts. Work outside those hours is not expected unless necessary to maintain the project schedule.
The project will be completed by New Jersey American Water's qualified contractor, J. Fletcher Creamer & Son. Traffic management will be coordinated with local officials to help maintain safe travel through the work area.
As part of this work, if lead or galvanized piping is identified, New Jersey American Water will work with the property owner to replace the entire service line from the curb to the home as part of a statewide initiative to remove lead and galvanized service lines by 2031.
