CAMDEN, N.J. – OCTOBER 5, 2026 – In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S, in partnership with the City of Camden, highlight the completion of three major infrastructure initiatives in Camden. Together, the projects help strengthen system reliability, emergency response capabilities, and community resilience.
“Fire Prevention Week is an important reminder that reliable water infrastructure is essential to community safety,” said Victor Carstarphen, Mayor, City of Camden. “These completed projects reflect the City and American Water’s commitment to proactive investment, effective collaboration and dependable service for Camden residents, businesses and first responders.”
The following are a few recently completed projects throughout the City:
- Tide gate replacements: Multiple tide gates were replaced at key locations throughout the city to help protect Camden’s sewer collection system from Delaware River water infiltration. The work included the removal of aging and redundant assets, installation of modern units and rehabilitation of associated chambers.
- Water main replacements: Since December 2025, approximately 4,000 linear feet of new water main, ranging from 6 to 12 inches in diameter, has been installed. The ongoing project also included replacement of approximately 65 valves, six fire hydrants, supporting system components and full roadway restoration.
- Valve and hydrant replacements: Targeted valve and hydrant upgrades were completed to improve system control, operational flexibility and access to reliable water supplies during planned maintenance or emergency events.
