Celebrating the Clean Water Act

October 18 marks the anniversary of the Clean Water Act – the federal legislation that protects our waterways from pollution by setting and regulating water quality standards for U.S. surface water.

Prior to the Clean Water Act, America's waters were in crisis, often flooded and even on fire with toxic pollution and contaminants. Since the Clean Water Act was passed, the nation saw a dramatic improvement in the health and safety of waterways across the country.

When it comes to complying with strict federal regulations for delivering safe, clean and reliable drinking water, American Water has consistently scored among the highest of all water companies. Learn how to view your Water Quality Report here.

Protecting our water at the source

Protecting safe, reliable drinking water begins long before water reaches a treatment plant. It starts upstream, in the rivers, lakes, reservoirs and watersheds that supply communities with the water they depend on every day.

American Water continues to take a leadership role through comprehensive source water protection programs designed to strengthen operational readiness and resiliency while protecting drinking water sources.
