West Virginia American Water Continues Kanawha Avenue Infrastructure Project, Invests $520,000

Charleston, W.Va., (July 17, 2025) – West Virginia American Water is pleased to announce the continuation of the Kanawha Avenue infrastructure project with a $520,000 investment in Nitro. The project began the week of July 9 and includes replacing 1,000 feet of aging pipe with 12-inch, 6-inch, and 2-inch PVC main.

“The Kanawha Avenue infrastructure project further builds upon an infrastructure project we completed in Nitro earlier this spring,” said Scott Wyman, President of West Virginia American Water. “We are excited to continue making essential infrastructure investments in our communities to help reduce service disruptions and maintain and improve service reliability and water quality for our customers.”

Crews will work Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., on Kanawha Avenue from Hickory Street to Juniper Street. Traffic restrictions will be in place. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September, with the final street restoration will be completed in the fall of 2025.

This infrastructure upgrade project is part of West Virginia American Water’s plan to invest more than $112 million in infrastructure upgrades across the state in 2025, supporting the economic health of communities across the company’s service area. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout local economies.

Over the past decade, West Virginia American Water has invested over $736 million in infrastructure projects and capital upgrades to address aging infrastructure across the Mountain State, including more than 168 miles of new water main. During construction, customers may experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. To report water related emergencies such as leaks, main breaks or other service disruptions, customers can submit a service request on the company’s website.
