West Virginia American Water Conducts Emergency Management Tabletop Exercise in Charleston
Charleston, W.Va. – November 20, 2025 – West Virginia American Water announced that on Tuesday, November 18th it successfully completed a tabletop exercise in Kanawha County, designed to strengthen emergency preparedness and response capabilities. The exercise involved a simulated scenario in which a key infrastructure component along the Kanawha River failed. It was designed to assess the company’s ability to maintain water service and safeguard public health during a significant disruption.
The scenario allowed West Virginia American Water to collaborate across departments within the company and with local and federal emergency management partners, helping ensure alignment on communication, resource deployment and contingency planning.
“Exercises like this help ensure that our team is prepared to respond quickly and effectively in an emergency situation to protect our communities as well as coordinate and collaborate with local officials and agencies to determine the best course of action,” said Scott Wyman, President of West Virginia American Water. “West Virginia American Water is uniquely positioned to bring national best practices to the local level, and we are committed to maintaining reliable service to our customers during an emergency event.”
Local emergency management leaders also participated in the event, including Kanawha County Emergency Management. “Preparedness is a shared responsibility,” said CW Sigman, Director of Kanawha County Emergency Management. “This exercise demonstrates how public and private partners can work together to anticipate challenges and protect the people of Kanawha County and the surrounding areas. We appreciate West Virginia American Water’s commitment to planning and coordination.”
