Press Releases
Alexandria, VA – (May 18, 2026) – The American Water Charitable Foundation, a philanthropic non-profit organization established by American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., and Virginia American Water, announced today that the Foundation awarded a total of $35,000 in State Strategic Impact grants to Alexandria Soccer Association (ASA) to support new water bottle filling stations in Alexandria Parks. The first was recently installed adjacent to the soccer field at Ben Brenman Park. Another bottle filling station will be installed later this year at a second location where ASA tournaments are frequently held.
The State Strategic Impact grant is part of the Foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program, focusing on three pillars of giving: Water, People and Communities. State Strategic Impact grants support high-impact projects and initiatives throughout American Water’s national footprint. The Foundation is funded through contributions from American Water shareholders and operates independently of customer rates.
"We are grateful for this water bottle filling station at Brenman Park as it helps thousands of soccer players (and community members!) stay safely hydrated during practices, games, tournaments and more throughout the year," says Sarah Christie, Deputy Director, Operations & Strategy, at Alexandria Soccer Association. “The bottle filling station is also a significant safety upgrade as kids do not have to cross the street from the fields to get their water from the restroom facility."
Alexandria Soccer Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, established in 1970 to offer soccer programs for residents of all ages and abilities within the city. ASA programs are intended to develop good character, mental and physical fitness, and interpersonal skills through soccer activities. ASA programs empower their participants to achieve their greatest potential, and part of that is becoming environmentally conscious citizens.
“It is great to see local organizations united by their commitment to environmental stewardship and encouraging reusable water bottle use,” Hashim Taylor, Director, City of Alexandria, Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. “The aligned values of ASA, American Water Charitable Foundation and Virginia American Water, and the city, together, make a positive impact on our environment and improve the spaces where we recreate.”
"The American Water Charitable Foundation is proud to support organizations that are making a meaningful impact across Virginia,” said Carrie Williams, President, American Water Charitable Foundation. “Through our State Strategic Impact Grants, we aim to strengthen programs that provide essential resources, promote environmental stewardship and support communities served by American Water.”
